Ruth babe ( 1895 - 1948 )  Category ( Athletes ) [suggest a correction]

He was born George Herman Ruth Junior in 1895. His father attended bar and would go on to own his own bar near the Baltimore waterfront area. There would be eight children but two of them would be the only survivors. George and his sister Mamie.

Living a difficult childhood, George's father loved the tavern business more than parenting. He took George to an orphanage and signed over his parental rights. While George (Babe) was at St. Mary's he wasn't very happy and stayed in trouble. However, he was permitted to play baseball and it became evident early on that he had talent.

Jack Dunn, who was a Baltimore Orioles owner saw Ruth play and offered to sign him. The other players on the team referred to him as "Jack's newest babe" and George Herman became Babe Ruth.

Five months with the Orioles and Ruth was picked up by the Red Sox. He had hit the big leagues. For the next six years, Babe Ruth played in the outfield and acted as pitcher for the team. Babe Ruth's legacy to his sport is often that he was the best hitter of all time but in fact, he was one of the most talented pitchers of all time as well.

In 1916, Babe Ruth pitched thirteen scoreless innings. It was in his first World Series of his career and the 14-innings played remain as the longest completed game in the history of the World Series.

Babe Ruth had various accomplishments on the field. Off the field, he was never one to dodge the bullet and his life held a lot of controversy. He married a seventeen year old waitress in 1914 but they separated by 1925. Helen (his wife) was killed in a fire four years later. In April of 1929, Babe Ruth married Claire Hodgson, a professional model.

Babe Ruth's career earned him various nicknames including "The Great Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat" and the media attention was always focused on Babe. One of his all-time greatest moments occurred in the Wrigley Field when Babe Ruth pointed to bleachers right above center field. When he hit the ball, it was precisely to the area where he pointed and many believed that he indeed called the shot where he hit what would go down in history as the longest home run ever hit out of that particular field.

Babe Ruth died in 1948. He left behind a legacy in baseball. He also continued to win posthumous awards including The Sporting News' Greatest Player of All Time and The Associated Press's Athlete of the Century which he earned in 1999.
