Scott E Parazynski was born in 1961 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He perhaps realized every child’s dream when he became not only a doctor but also an astronaut.
Scott Parazynski attended various schools throughout the world. He attended junior high school in Lebanon and high school at the Tehran American School in Iran. In 1979, he attended the American Community School in Athens, Greece. In 1983, he graduated from Stanford and continued his education there.
In 1989, he graduated from Stanford with his medical degree from Stanford Medical School. His internship took place at Harvard Medical School and he completed his residency in Colorado where he was selected to the Astronaut Corps.
Scott Parazynski’s research has been wide ranging. He studied African Sleeping Sickness while he was in school at Stanford. He also conducted research at the NASA-Ames Research Center after he was awarded the NASA Graduate Student Fellowship. In March of 1992, he was selected as an astronaut with NASA and he reported to Johnson Space Center later that same year.
After one year of training, Scott Parazynski was qualified as a mission specialist. His missions have been wide ranging just like the research that he has conducted over the course of his lifetime.
Dr. Parazynski was on board the STS-66 and the ATLAS-3 missions. The ATLAS-3 mission was part of a continuing NASA program. Dr. Parazynski’s job duties included several experiments on board within the crew cabin. Scott Parazynski was also on board the STS-86 Atlantis, STS-95 Discovery, and the STS-100 Endeavor. He has been on various space missions with various responsibilities.
Dr. Scott Parazynski is married to Gail Marie Vozzella. They have two children. Parazynski is a flight pilot with over 2000 logged flight hours. He flies a variety of aircraft and is a commercial, seaplane, multi-engine, and instrument-rated pilot.
