He was born in 1645 and would perhaps go down in history as an artist who was never able to capture fame as his own during his lifetime. He was a local artist but he was never known world-wide during his lifetime. Aert de Gelder still managed to have an impact on art history.

Aert de Gelder was one of the last known students of Rembrandt. He studied under him while he was still in Amsterdam and became very fond of his work. Aert de Gelder studied under Rembrandt from 1661 until 1663 but remained dedicated to Rembrandt techniques for quite some time after those years of initial study.

A Dutch painter, Aert de Gelder picked up the late styles and techniques of Rembrandt and used this in his own work going into the 18th century. By then, many weren’t quite as interested in Rembrandt as Aert de Gelder may have thought.

He never sold a painting but Aert would make history because of some of his work and contributions to his craft. He was unknown for the most part while living but in his death, some of his style was duly noted.

Aert de Gelder liked to use rich accessories, like Rembrandt, and that was something noticed in some of his work. Additionally, he enjoyed using Old Testament subjects. His studio, it was believed, was a hub for antiques and he used dummies when he was painting for inspiration that he carried over into his art.

Aert de Gelder was a wealthy man which could be one of the reasons that his art was never sold. Then again, many during his era had tired of Rembrandt so it is also possible that it couldn’t be sold. Aert de Gelder died in 1727.
