They were the English rock group from Liverpool that would sing their way into cities and countries around the globe. They were the band that member John Lennon even said would’ve never been if "there had never been an Elvis" even going as far as stating at the time that if "there hadn’t been an Elvis, there wouldn’t have been a Beatles."
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Star were The Beatles. The band was one that was worthy of the attention that they earned and Beatlemania was something that everyone during the sixties knew a little something about.
In the UK, The Beatles released over forty singles, albums, and EPs that hit number one. Their record company at the time estimated that by 1985, over one billion Beatles albums, discs and tapes had been sold. In the US alone, The Beatles became known as the best selling musical act ever and they likely still hold that record.
The band was not without its troubles and the band wasn’t without its share of controversies. The controversy included the 1966 tour where the Beatles visited the Philippines and thanks to a mix-up, the band was shunned. There was a religious backlash soon after that episode and fans around the world burned their albums.
Additionally, drug use was rampant. Some speculation as to what drugs and which members used them has been written about in the past. LSD seems to be something that John Lennon particularly had a lot of familiarity with.
The final live Beatles performance was in January of 1969. It took place on the top of what is now known as the Apple Building. The last paying concert that the Beatles performed was in April of 1966 in San Francisco.
Today, two Beatles members are alive and well. Ringo Star and Paul McCartney are still living. John Lennon died in 1981 and George Harrison died twenty years later in 2001.
