He was noted for being overly confident about his work, perhaps even somewhat egotistical. German Neoclassical Painter Johann Zoffany was an artist active in England during his lifetime and in his death, his work is still appreciated and widely admired.
Born in 1733, Johann Zoffany was born in Franfort but he went to Britain because the royal family was very intrigued by his talent. When he went to Britain, he wanted to become more familiar with the royal family and was able to paint them in various situations.
Britain’s King George II liked Zoffany’s work. Queen Charlotte was particularly fond of his work as well. Later in life and after his death, one of Zoffany’s more notable works of the royal family included a painting Queen Charlotte and Her Two Eldest Children which was one of his paintings with an informal setting.
Johann Zoffany would become known for a particular style of painting geared around the arts as well. He was known for what would be called "conversation pieces" where he captured the more well known actors or actresses of the time in the roles that they played as an actor. The theatrical conversational pieces were not popular with the public during Zoffany’s lifetime.
Later in life, Johann went on to paint various characters in huge paintings. The paintings were busy with numerous people and various objects. The attention to detail was clearly defined in his painting, particularly his huge paintings.
Johann Zoffany died in 1810.
