Ray Charles ( 1930 - 2004 )  Category ( Musicians ) [suggest a correction]

Frank Sinatra once said that Ray Charles was the "only true genius in the business" and of course, many others have believed he possessed unmatched talent and a creative mind like no other. Still, Ray Charles wasn't without his faults but he was adorned with talent in spite of everything else.

Ray Charles was born in Georgia in 1930 to an unmarried couple. He watched his younger brother drown when he was only six years old and by seven, he had lost his sight. Some believe it was due to Glaucoma that Ray lost his eyesight.

Charles learned to write music and play various instruments. He attended the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and the Blind in Florida and soon found that music was the path that he would take in life.

When he left school, he worked briefly in Tampa before he moved to Seattle, Washington. By 1951, Charles had his first label and Swingtime Records released Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand.

Ray Charles later signed with Atlantic and soon charted hits like Mess Around and I Got a Woman. His larger hits such as Georgia on My Mind came years later along with a very memorable commercial for Pepsi.

In the 1990s, Pepsi and Ray Charles teamed up with the You Got the Right One Baby! The commercial was a hit and Ray Charles claimed fame once more for his own.

While many understand that Ray Charles was one of the best musical talents of all time, some aren't without the realization that Charles was believed to be a 20-year heroine addict. In fact, in 1965, he was arrested for a heroine-related incident.

Still, as a performer and a great musician, Ray Charles earned various awards throughout his career. One of the most coveted would have to be the one that he earned with Rolling Stone Magazine. He was ranked number ten on The Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The list included some of the biggest names to ever pass through the music industry.
