Imagine being on the open waters back in the mid-1400s. Think about sailing the open sea and being on the sea for days, weeks, and months at a time without land in sight or navigation systems to help guide the adventure. Christopher Columbus was an explorer who began his travels under such conditions.
Christopher Columbus was born between the months of August and October of 1451. The exact date is uncertain. He was born in Genoa, or at least, that seems to be the popular opinion of historians.
Christopher Columbus became known as a great leader capable of navigating fleets of ships around the world. He was a colonizer who was able to discover lands beyond the open waters and send colonists to occupy those lands.
Columbus was credited as one of the first Europeans to explore the Americas but it has been proven that the Vikings set foot on the land first. However, the Columbus voyages were able to lead others to the understanding of the hemisphere.
He was able to guide others to what would later be called and considered the New World. Christopher Columbus was instrumental in making the voyages that would ensure that the New World was one that people would want to visit if not develop.
After several voyages, Christopher Columbus would face failing health. After an extended illness that proved terminal, Columbus died in 1506.
