He is a critically acclaimed playwright and a filmmaker who doesn't mind to cover the more controversial topics. He writes short stories and novels and covers topics including sexuality and nationalism. He is Hanif Kureishi.
Born in London, Kureishi has blended nationality from his parents. His mother was English and his father was a Pakistani. He went to the UK to study law but soon decided his pursuits would not take him into the realm of a legal profession. He spent almost a year studying philosophy but dropped out before later continuing his studies at King's College London where he earned his philosophy degree.
Soon, he had secured recognition as a playwright in My Beautiful Laundrette. Winning several coveted awards such as the New York Film Critics Best Screenplay Award and a Best Screenplay Academy Award nomination, Hanif Kureishi quickly established himself as a name to be reckoned with in the industry.
Kureishi would earn equal respect for his novel The Buddha of Suburbia which was made into a television series. In 1991, London Kills Me was a film ready for praise. Written by Kureishi and directed by him as well, the feature film gained limited approval but some good reviews nonetheless.
His 1998 novel Intimacy became the object of a critic's frenzy opening him up to some ridicule when the novel became a movie with uninhibited sex scenes. Hanif Kureishi opened himself up to the controversy and came through it with even greater success.
Hanif Kureishi's credibility has been open for discussions especially when his sister came out to disclose some non-truths that Kureishi apparently fictionalized some in his novel. The Buddha of Suburbia included some life references that now seem up for debate.
Hanif Kureishi is expecting a 2008 novel Something to Tell You which will be released among a frenzy of anticipation. Kureishi is married and has three children.
