Born in Indiana in 1909, David Garriot Ryans graduated from high school in 1927 to embark on a journey of educational psychology. Five years after graduating high school, he received his BA in psychology and philosophy. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota where he completed his graduate studies in educational psychology. He graduated with his MA in 1933.
David Garriot Ryans accepted a position with Minnesota's Eveleth Junior College. There, he became the director of psychological testing and taught as a psychology instructor. However, he wouldn't stay there long.
Ryans eventually received his Ph.D. in psychology and general psychology from the University of Minnesota and soon afterward, he would earn the position of Dean of Faculty at William Woods College. There, he was also a professor of psychology. His research and dedication to educational psychology continued.
By 1958, David Garriot Ryans was a sought after educational psychology instructor. When he joined the University of Texas in 1958, he'd already made a name for himself earning global respect for his teacher characteristic studies.
In 1960, while teaching at UT Austin, Ryans published Characteristics of Teachers. In his lifetime, he would go on to author over 180 published articles. Ryans retired from educational research in 1975. He later died in his California home in 1986.
