Frans Snyders ( 1579 - 1657 )  Category ( Painters ) [suggest a correction]

Frans SnydersFamous for his vivid and elaborate paintings of animals and still life, Frans Snyders was among the great sixteenth-century Flemish and Dutch painters. His work reflects both the calm palette Northern European masters were known for, along with the dynamism of the Baroque period. He was born and lived his entire life in Antwerp. It is known that he was a student of Pieter Brueghel the Younger and also that of Hendrick van Balen, who was the first instructor of Van Dyck. He later became a friend of Van Dyck, who painted Snyders and his wife at least twice. He was a member of the Antwerp painters guild, attaining the rank of master in that organization in 1602.

Like many other European artists of his time, Snyders traveled to Italy for further inspiration from the great Italian masters. While staying in Milan he obtained work from Cardinal Borromeo. Upon his return he married Margaretha de Vos, who came from a family of painters. During his early years as a professional artist, Snyders focused on flowers and still life, though he did paint portraits and historical scenes as well, and is regarded as a practitioner of the Mannerist style of painting. He is credited with establishing two new forms of still life, the hunting still life, visible in his Wild Boar Hunt (1649), and the “larder” picture, such as "Still Life with a Swan." Larder pictures featured scenes of abundance in a home pantry.  As his style emerged and matured, however, he turned to painting animals, and was particularly skillful at portraying the dynamism of animal combat, even in its most violent forms.

Snyders is known especially for his execution of textures, including fur and skin. His efforts drew the attention of the great master Rubens, and he was hired to paint animals and inanimate objects in his paintings. He became such great colleagues and friends with Rubens, that the latter was named as an executor of Snyder's will. Later in life Snyders was appointed chief painter to the Archduke Albert of Austria, who was at that time serving as governor of the Low Countries. During this period Snyders created some of his most memorable works, including Stag-Hunt, which was presented to King Philip III of Spain. After that success, Philip and his successor, Philip IV, commissioned a number of works from Snyders.
