Alfred Hitchcock ( 1899 - 1980 )  Category ( Filmmakers ) [suggest a correction]

He has been called the "master of suspense" and perhaps there is a reason for it. He was, after all, the man who could draw in a viewer and hold them there breathless until they were either scared into a sigh of relief or forced into it. He was Alfred Hitchcock.

Alfred Hitchcock was born in 1899 and raised in England. It is believed that his parents held to a rather unusual way of punishing their son when they disciplined him. Many would go as far as to say that Hitchcock’s parents used a firm hand to discipline him as a boy. Some of the cruel and unusual punishments have even been depicted in some of the Hitchcock films.

Alfred Hitchcock’s films often led the viewer into a world where the characters were wrongly accused. His films varied in genre. He produced and directed suspense and thrillers primarily but had the ability to direct in any genre.

During his career as a film director, Hitchcock directed more than fifty films. He was a movie director for six decades which allowed him to experience the industry through the silent film era into the color era and the era referred to as the "talkies".

Hitchcock won an Academy Award for Best Picture for his film Rebecca. However, he never won the Oscar for "Best Director" which should’ve been considered a shame by those in the industry who voted. After all, few had the extraordinary talent that Alfred Hitchcock possessed.

His line-up of films included Torn Curtain and Topaz, which were two of his spy-related films. He also directed the popular Spellbound. With 20th Century Fox, he was able to work on the film Lifeboat and of course, the Academy Award winner, Rebecca. Dozens of others lined up to his credit. Not all of them memorable but all of them definitely imprinted with the Hitchcock name attached.

Alfred Hitchcock died in 1980. He will forever be remembered as the "master of suspense" and he was indeed, the one deserving of the title.
