Born in 1930, Jasper Johns is well known and held in high esteem for his painting dubbed as simply the Flag. He is believed to have painted the flag after dreaming about it which is often something a lot of creative talents of his era and even today, claim as their inspiration.
Jasper Johns went to the University of South Carolina where he was able to attend school for three semesters from 1947 until 1948. He then went on to attend the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York City where he met John Cage and other artists who helped him find his way into the contemporary world of art and the crowd that followed it.
Known widely for his Flag, Map and Numbers paintings, Johns has enjoyed great artistic success. In 1998, more than twenty million dollars was paid for the Jasper Johns White Flag. Today, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the New York home of the painting.
Jasper Johns lives in Connecticut. He has enjoyed a life rich with artistic adventures and once had the opportunity to play in the popular television show The Simpsons.
Jasper Johns list of most popular works include False Start, White Flag, Three Flags, Seasons, Figure Five, and Study for Skin. There are others, of course, and perhaps some yet to be discovered.
